Senators Boxer, Sanders: Champions for our Right to Know!
Thanks to US Senators Barbara Boxer and Bernie Sanders for being tireless champions for our right to know what’s in our food, and for fighting to protect states’ rights to label genetically engineered food.
As Senator Sanders put it in this fantastic 15 minute video that is well worth watching, “I personally believe, and I think most Americans believe, that when a mother goes to the store and purchases food for her child, she has a right to know what she is feeding her child.”
Labeling genetically engineered foods and giving consumers knowledge about the food they are ingesting, “is not, I believe, a terribly radical idea,” Sanders said.
Sanders’ and Boxer’s amendment to the Farm Bill would have affirmed states’ rights to require labeling of genetically engineered foods, thereby preventing future attempts to circumvent those rights. Thankfully, states already have the right to require such labeling; the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act expressly allows states to add language to food labels so long as the federal government doesn’t already require language on the same subject.
Case in point: Alaska already has a law on the books requiring labeling for genetically engineered fish.
Next up, California! Yes on 37 for the right to know what’s in our food.
