You might want to think twice about food shopping at Walmart before the next family barbecue. The store has admitted it will start selling genetically engineered sweet corn – the first such sweet corn to be widely available as a whole food on American supermarket shelves.

The sweet corn has been genetically engineered to withstand large amounts of Roundup weed-killer and also to express a pesticide, Bt toxin, within the corn itself. Yum, a little butter and salt with that?

A Walmart rep told the Chicago Tribune that they see “no scientifically valid reason” not to sell the corn. They must have missed the fact that the US requires no health and safety studies of genetically engineered food.

Maybe they don’t know that Monsanto, creator of Roundup Ready corn and seller of Roundup, has said: “Monsanto should not have to vouchsafe the safety of biotech food. Our interest is in selling as much of it as possible. Assuring its safety is the FDA’s job.”

Yet the FDA has said, “Ultimately, it is the food producer who is responsible for assuring safety.”

While we wait on them to figure out who will assure the safety of this food, what’s a consumer to do? How can we tell if the sweet corn on our barbecue is genetically engineered?  

We can’t, until we get labeling. That’s why it’s so important to pass California’s Prop 37, which will give consumers the right to know if our food has been genetically engineered – and the right to decide for ourselves whether to buy this food or not.
