A Social Storm for the Right to Know

Hello social media mavens,

We have intel from a source that the Grocery Manufacturers Association – the lobby group representing the country’s biggest food corporations – are aiming all their firepower at the California Right to Know initiative to label genetically engineered foods.

“Defeating the initiative is GMA’s single highest priority this year,” said GMA President Pamela Bailey said in a speech to the American Soybean Association. Labeling, she said, is “a serious, long term threat to the viability of agricultural biotechnology.”

Really? But Ms. Bailey, the last time we checked this is still America – and Americans have a right to decide for themselves what they eat and feed their families.

Bailey didn’t stop there. She also said that the difference between the GMO labeling initiative in Oregon 10 years ago and this year’s California initiative is that the California proposal “is really a key strategy in a national campaign organized and driven by a vocal, organized organic movement.”

The other difference, she said, “is that social media is feeding this effort and making it more difficult to confront and more powerful.”

Now that we have this information, we’ve decided it’s time to step up our game! Join me in launching the California Right To Know social storm today in support of our theme “A Million More.”  Californians collected 1 million signatures, a million dollars and now we need a million more actions to take us to victory!

Please join me in a weekly strategy to get our message out far and wide. If the GMA sees our social media work as a threat, let’s show them our social muscle with clear and direct focus. We’ll send you social strategy emails every Sunday with a list of activities you can participate in. We’ll also share posts, talking points, links and themes.  In this way, we can coordinate our efforts and combat the high dollars that are sure to be spent on disinformation ads.

Are you in?
