Some Valley growers back Prop. 37

A group of organic and conventional growers pledged their support for Proposition 37 Wednesday, saying the initiative that would require labeling of genetically altered foods in California is a benefit to farmers and consumers.

The farmers gathered Wednesday at the Vineyard Farmers Market in Fresno to speak in favor of the proposition, one of the most contentious initiatives on the November ballot.

As part of Prop. 37, food makers would be required to label products that have genetically engineered ingredients. That means stickers or labels on many common grocery store items, including cereal, cake mixes and cookies.
